How Woodgrain Countered Rising Lumber Theft With Multi-Site Video

As lumber prices hit all-time highs, Woodgrain saw theft of molding parts, truckloads of materials, and break-ins in employee parking lots. SCW delivered a networked, multi-site camera system the team could manage locally and remotely.

About Woodgrain

With twenty-two locations across the United States and another in Chile, Woodgrain is one of the largest millwork operations in the world, known for its doors, moldings, and windows.

It began in 1954 in Utah, when sawmill equipment was used to settle a debt owed to Merrill “Bud” Dame. Today, second- and third-generation Dame family members run the business from headquarters in Fruitland, Idaho. As a vertically integrated operation, Woodgrain owns its supply chain, from the forests to the facilities that manufacture molding and parts for doors and windows.

01 · The Problem

The Problem

The short answer to Woodgrain’s immediate problem was COVID.

When over-stressed supply chains break, raw materials and finished products can’t reach customers fast enough. Even a vertically integrated operation like Woodgrain couldn’t keep pace with the pandemic.

As lumber and building materials reached all-time highs, theft increased. Woodgrain experienced stolen molding parts, stolen truckloads of materials worth thousands of dollars, and break-ins of employee cars in company parking lots.

02 · The Solution

The Solution

Woodgrain had no surveillance equipment in place. Its strong commitment to employee safety played a big part in the decision to deploy cameras.

Cameras are used between aisles inside distribution centers and in yard areas to track safety, and to monitor vehicles that had been causing damage to yards and parking lots.

SCW’s security technicians created comprehensive layouts and product lists for all the equipment the project needed, at no additional charge.

Made sense to deploy cameras to counter theft that had happened before, liability workman’s comp claims that were fraudulent… prove one false claim it pays for itself!

03 · The Result

The Result

Since the SCW cameras were implemented, Woodgrain has seen a noticeable reduction in product theft, and has caught people attempting it.

Remote viewing became more important than Woodgrain originally expected. When a national ice storm hit a renovated Texas facility with an SCW system, the cameras let the team keep a close watch on the property.

At remote sites, when a break-in alarm comes in, administrators can check the footage before sending someone in or calling police out for a false alarm.

At the Fruitland headquarters, Hawkes sees potential for adding Survail, SCW’s AI-powered analytics, to study and measure production and productivity.

04 · Why SCW?

Why Woodgrain Chose SCW

Commercial grade

SCW sells only commercial-grade equipment. “SCW was the least costly for what we were getting, best value for what we were comparing,” said Hawkes, who also cited how easy it was to implement a fully networked, multi-site system Woodgrain could manage locally and remotely.

Single-source purchase

Buying from one security-focused provider made purchasing simple, and the scale of Woodgrain’s operation presented no difficulty for SCW’s technicians.

Scalability

SCW systems are designed to meet immediate needs and to be easily duplicated as Woodgrain’s business expands.

Service after the sale

Free, US-based, lifetime tech support made SCW the obvious choice. Woodgrain appreciated the help SCW’s experts provided with expansion planning after the initial sale.
